We are launching a new journal, R e c l a m a t i o n s, to address the need for critical reflection and debate on the new political front forming to fight austerity measures as they propel the privatization of public education. Following 30 years of state policy designed to use strategic deficits to "starve the beast" of public services, California's neoliberal government has capitalized on the latest economic crisis to launch aggressive expropriations of the public domain, swiftly privatizing and resegregating the state's vast system of public education. At the same time, a movement to reclaim the losses and emancipate the commons has quickly emerged and has been growing more diverse and persistent. A number of collective actions and voices across the UC, CSU and CCC campuses have signaled the opening of a new political front, which carries the promising potential to expand its geographical and political horizons.
As positions, tactics, and activities proliferate across campuses, we find a pressing need for a public forum to address recent developments. R e c l a m a t i o n s is not an organ of any particular group or alliance. Rather, it aims to embrace a heterogeneity of forces while remaining focused on the broader aspirations of the movement.
R e c l a m a t i o n s seeks to provide an independent space for critical reflection, analysis, and debate. It envisions a terrain where ideas can be refined and positions articulated in relationship to each other to gain more traction. We thereby hope that R e c l a m a t i o n s would function metabolically: by providing a space for dialogue and productive disagreement, R e c l a m a t i o n s would serve as a vehicle for deepening our collective efforts.
